Jacob Schultz is an Associate in Mullen Coughlin’s Litigation practice. With over five years of legal experience, he focuses his practice on defending organizations of all sizes and from all industry sectors in single-plaintiff, class action and B2B privacy and security litigation. He represents clients in third-party disputes ranging from data privacy and security incidents and data breaches; violations of federal consumer protection and U.S. state privacy laws and other commercial torts; breach of contract; and Tech E&O matters. With previous experience assisting clients with incident response, containment and compliance following data privacy and security incidents, Jacob has an understanding and knowledge of the various U.S. state, federal and international laws, regulations and other statutes that underpin third-party privacy and security disputes.
Licensed in Pennsylvania, Jacob is often called upon to develop common and novel defenses for his clients, including with drafting court pleadings and motions; understanding case law; and reviewing, drafting and negotiating settlements and other resolutions. He works closely with both internal and external teams – including his clients’ legal counsel (General Counsel or other), insurance carriers, law enforcement and Plaintiff’s counsel – to effectively and efficiently defend his clients’ interests through all stages of litigation and come to a favorable outcome for his clients.
Prior to joining Mullen Coughlin, Jacob was an Associate Attorney in his previous AmLaw 200 firm’s Professional Liability and Cybersecurity practices. There, he defended licensed professionals, such as attorneys, corporate officers and real estate agents, in litigation related to professional malpractice. He also assisted clients with data privacy and security incident response following unauthorized access of organizational computer and network systems.
Prior to his private practice, Jacob was an Assistant District Attorney for the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office where he was initially assigned to the Municipal Court and Motions Court Units, and subsequently, the Post-Conviction Relief Act (PCRA) Unit. Jacob also was a Law Clerk for the Honorable J. Christopher Gibson, J.S.C. in Cape May (NJ) County, as well as an Intern Law Clerk for the Honorable C. Darnell Jones, II in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
Jacob received his J.D. with honors in Business and Entrepreneurship Law from Drexel University Thomas R. Kline School of Law, and a B.A. in East Asian Languages and Civilizations from the University of Chicago. He is business-level fluent in Mandarin Chinese, Japanese and French, and conversational in German and Italian.
