Kara Brownlie is an Associate with Mullen Coughlin practicing in the Incident Response practice. Her primary focus is responding to and investigating data privacy and security incidents, such as ransomware attacks, business email compromises and other unauthorized network intrusions, on behalf of all industry sectors. She works closely with external incident response stakeholders to identify the nature and scope of the incident and then counsels her clients on their legal, regulatory and contractual obligations such as notification and law enforcement reporting. She also assists with her clients’ responses to regulatory investigations from state, federal and industry-related regulatory agencies.
Prior to joining Mullen Coughlin, Kara practiced as a general liability litigator at a regional civil defense law firm. She was also a paralegal at a business and intellectual property law firm, gaining valuable legal, analytical and communications skills that she uses when interacting with cyber insurance claims teams, external partners such as digital forensics firms, law enforcement and her clients.
Kara received her J.D. from Pennsylvania State University Dickinson School of Law, concentrating in commercial and intellectual property law. She received her B.A. in Political Science summa cum laude from Cedar Crest College.
Outside of her practice, Kara keeps busy playing pickleball and soccer and has a passion for photography.
